The applicable tests for automatic valves and automatic container valves are listed in Table 6-1 below.

6.4.1 Continuous Operation

An automatic valve and automatic container valve shall meet the requirements of Part 2, Section 2.8, Continuous Operation.

Unless otherwise limited by its design or usage, the valve shall be tested using 50,000 cycles.

Following the cycle tests, the automatic valve and automatic container valve shall meet the internal and external leakage requirements of Part 2, Section 2.5, Leakage.

8.13.2

A vent or a chimney serving more than one appliance shall provide effective venting and shall be sized (a) so that its effective flue area is not less than that of the largest draft-control device outlet or the largest flue outlet, plus 50% of the sum of the outlet areas of the additional appliances; or (b) in accordance with good engineering practice, such as by the use of

(i) Table C.3, C.4, C.7, or C.8 of Annex C for a draft-hood-equipped or a fan-assisted Category I

appliance; or

(ii) engineered venting tables acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.

8.13.3

A vent may be any shape, provided that its venting capacity is equal to the capacity of the round pipe for which it is substituted and its minimum internal dimension is not less than 2 in (50 mm). In no case shall the area be less than the area of a 3 in (75 mm) inside diameter pipe. See Table C.10 of Annex C.

8.14 Vent and chimney termination

8.14.1

A vent or chimney shall extend high enough above either a building or a neighbouring obstruction so that wind from any direction will not create a positive pressure in the vicinity of either the vent termination or the chimney termination.

8.14.2

Except for a special venting system with positive vent pressure, a vent shall extend not less than 2 ft (600 mm) above the highest point where it passes through a flat roof of a building and not less than 2 ft (600 mm) higher than any portion of a building within a horizontal distance of 10 ft (3 m).

8.14.3

A vent used in a special venting system with positive vent pressure and passing through a roof shall extend at least 18 in (450 mm) above the highest point where it passes through the roof surface and the same distance above any other obstruction within a horizontal distance of 18 in (450 mm).

8.14.4

A chimney shall extend not less than 3 ft (900 mm) above the highest point where it passes through the roof of a building and not less than 2 ft (600 mm) higher than any portion of a building within a horizontal distance of 10 ft (3 m).

8.14.5

Except for a special venting system with positive vent pressure, a vent passing through a pitched roof shall extend above the highest point where it passes through a roof surface in accordance with Figure 8.1 and shall extend not less than 2 ft (600 mm) above any other obstruction within a horizontal distance of 10 ft (3 m).

8.14.6

A vent or chimney shall extend not less than 5 ft (1.5 m) in height above either the highest connected appliance draft-hood outlet or flue collar except as provided in Clause 8.24.1.

8.14.7

A vent serving a wall furnace shall extend not less than 12 ft (3.6 m) in height above the bottom of the furnace and shall contain neither lateral nor horizontal sections unless the furnace is certified for room-heater-type venting and is so marked.

2.3.7

Unless otherwise specified, all tests shall be conducted using dry air or nitrogen. Qualified personnel may also test with natural gas provided that appropriate safety measures are taken. The dew point of the test gas at the test pressure shall be at a temperature at which there is no icing, or hydrate or liquid formation.

2.3.8

Tests specified to establish the acceptance of a material for use in a component may be waived by the testing agency when acceptable evidence in the form of a declaration, supplied by the manufacturer of the material, to substantiate its suitability for use in the expected environment, is submitted by the applicant.

2.3.9

It is recognized that multifunctional components may be made up of several components as defined in Part 1, Section 1.1. Such components shall be examined for conformance to this part of NGV 3.1 and tested according to the appropriate functional tests.

2.4 Hydrostatic Strength

2.4.1

Components intended for use at pressures equal to or in excess of 14 kPa (2 psi) shall not rupture when subjected to the following test.

This test shall be conducted at room temperature. The outlet opening in components shall be plugged and valve seats or internal blocks made to assume the open position. One virgin component shall undergo this test, as well as additional components as specified in the subsequent tests.

A hydrostatic pressure of 2.5 times the specified service pressure of the component shall be applied to the inlet of the component for a period of three minutes. The component shall be examined to show that rupture has not occurred.

2.4.2

The hydrostatic pressure shall then be increased at a rate of less than or equal to 1.4 mPa/sec until component failure. The hydrostatic pressure at failure shall be recorded. The failure pressure of previously tested components shall be no less than 80 percent of the failure pressure of the virgin component.

2.5 Leakage

2.5.1 General

Prior to conditioning, purge the component with nitrogen and then seal it at 2.5 percent of service pressure using nitrogen, dry air or natural gas.

Conduct all tests while the component is continuously exposed to the specified test temperatures. The component shall either be bubble-free or have a leakage rate less than the values specified below.

Plug each component outlet opening with the appropriate mating connection and apply the test pressure to the inlet.

Apply pressurized air, nitrogen or natural gas to the component.

Annex A (informative) Report forms

Note: This Annex is not a mandatory part of this Standard.

A.1

The following forms should be used: (a) report of manufacturing and certification of conformance, in the format shown in Figure A.1; (b) report of chemical analysis of material for metal containers, liners, or bosses, in a format of the manufacturer’s choosing;

(c) report of mechanical properties of material for metal containers and liners, in a format of the manufacturer’s choosing; and

(d) report of physical and mechanical properties of materials for non-metallic liners, in a format of the manufacturer’s choosing.

Each form should be signed by representatives of the independent inspection authority and the manufacturer.
